This is a very interesting article I came across with a topic that had never occurred to me in the slightest bit. Researchers had multiple trials with over 100 participants and came to the conclusion that think out loud(in the most literal sense), helps us perform better on basically everything. Which obviously can be implemented into practicing.
I really enjoyed reading this article. It makes me feel less crazy now, because I sometimes have a tendency to talk myself through things during my practice sessions. Just like the article stated, it helps you slow down and really think about the things that you are trying to do. I was once in a master class where I was told to walk to different points of the room and look at the area where I was playing. I was then instructed to list of different things to focus on during my next run through. By doing this, it made it a lot easier to think about those things, and actually apply it to my playing.
ReplyDeleteI agree that thinking out loud can be really effective! It gives you a chance to clarify your thoughts and, therefore perform better. It's almost like you're being your own teacher in the practice room by verbally giving yourself advice and directions. I've only really talked to myself in the practice room when I've been working on rhythmic difficulties, but now I think I'll plan on talking to myself more and see how effective it can be.
ReplyDeleteWhoo! I'm glad I'm not crazy. I agree with Isabel, it allows you to be a little more objective and more of an outside listener. I find that if there is a technique thing that I need to focus on during a song, if I say it out loud before I begin, it becomes a little easier.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree thinking out loud is something I do all the time. I always felt like I was crazy but it has a really great purpose.
