I find this fascinating, and a bit concerning, honestly. I put a lot of pressure on myself--I provide my own negative feedback loop--and I would say this holds true for me. I can learn things incredibly quickly, but I don't often retain them well. I also do better under teachers who offer more positive incentive and neutralize my own negative feedback for myself. I actually believe this study needs more study. These students were in a fairly low-pressure environment, and the individual tendency towards perfectionism/pressure on self/work ethic was not observed. All of these factors contribute to how music (and, indeed, anything else) is learned and whether positive (reward) or negative (punishment) feedback is better. While it might be useful to know how people tend to respond generally, learning many things, especially music, is a highly individualized process. I would like to see studies that reflect this better.
I agree with Abigail in that this study needs more study. I feel that the students need to be in a higher pressure environment for the study to work. I also put a lot of pressure on myself and am my own worst critic. I also do better with teachers that give me positive feedback. I would love to see how much farther this study can go.
