Musicians never dance?
I know many of us in this section actually enjoy dancing. What is your opinion on this article? If you don't dance regularly do you think it would help you improve certain aspects of musicianship or do you think you're fine and dancing is not necessary at all?
The article is very interesting about why most musicians don't dance. I get the reasoning behind us developing a totally different skill opposed to learning to dancing being an issue, but let it not be forgotten that besides not having major ability in dancing some people also just aren't comfortable with dancing. Me, for example, I can't stand the thought of dancing, I could jerk my body one time at an attempt at dancing and immediately be nervous about people watching. That's just me, I don't envision myself ever being very comfortable with dancing so I'll just avoid it as best I can.
ReplyDeleteI particularly liked his point that musicians are frustrated because they understand the music better, not in spite of that understanding. They want to have the same ability to express the music that they can with their instrument and that they can see inside their head. I understand this personally, as a movement actress as well as a musician. I think it is a great skill to learn to use your body to express music, because I think it enhances your experience of that music. If we could all dance music before we played it, the way in which we played it would be affected by the way in which we danced it.
ReplyDeleteI think dancing can really help with our understanding of music and our performance. As musicians we should learn to let loose sometimes and enjoy expressing ourselves through a different way that's not just playing our instrument. In saying this, some people like Chris aren't comfortable with dancing, and that's perfectly alright too! I think it's something that people should just at least try. It's a great skill to have if you can dance without worrying too much about what others may think of you. :)
ReplyDeleteI think music can truly help us understand our music for a performance. When you dance you feel it full body when you play it is more of a mental emotional feeling so if you completely put it all together then you can understand more
ReplyDeleteI've definitely struggled with applying music to physical movements beyond expression from playing. I can visualize what moves might fit the music, but I have no idea how to translate that to my own body. I think being able to dance would be extremely useful and help my growth as a musician
