How Playing an Instrument Benefits your Brain

How Playing an Instrument Benefits your Brain

If you have ever wondered what was going on in your brain when you are playing music, this short Ted-Ed video is perfect for you!

Music is very beneficial to brain activity. Playing music is like a brain workout, engaging almost every area of the brain at once. Over time these brain functions will strengthen, forming a super brain (the specific affects will be explained in the video).

I chose this article because I have heard a fair amount of musicians discussing why they are in music, and if it is even worth their time. Even if you are not looking at music as a full time career, the affects of playing a musical instrument will benefit you in any job that you choose to pursue.

Discussion Question: Do you think that this video over-exaggerates the affects of music on the brain?

  1. Great video Tyler :) I don't think this exaggerates the effects of music on the brain. Plenty of experiments have proved the benefits of playing an instrument as well as demonstrating the busy brain activity of musicians. It really trains lots of parts of the brain to operate more efficiently, and these skills can be transferred over to social and academic settings. On the other hand, listening to music and not playing it doesn't really produce these same effects. Similarly with sports, you obviously don't get physically fit by watching it.

In Australia, the education system certainly values music as an important way to develop a child's brain, regardless of whether the student will pursue it as a future career or not. In fifth grade, students must choose and learn an instrument for the year. They learn the fundamentals of music, play in an ensemble together and even have their own concert. Of course, if the student enjoys the instrument, they will continue with private lessons at school for as long as they desire. I think this is a wonderful idea that should be brought to the American education system. It not only allows the students to strengthen their motor, visual and auditory skills, but it also exposes them to the fun and enjoyment of playing music.

  2. I have always really like this video I have watched it multiple times. I think it puts the idea of the affects into a realistic perspective. I feel like they have the evidence to back up what they are saying pretty straight forward

  6. Ive found the study of the brain and music fascinating in the past. I really liked how the video separated the brain functions of when you play music vs. when you listen to music, and how the areas of the brain strengthened by music can be used in other activities.
